Sorry I’ve been MIA friends! If you follow along with me on Instagram, you’ll know that we recently announced the news of our little Green Bean, coming in March. Now that the secret is out, I’m so excited to share more of my pregnancy journey with other mamas-to-be + tips on balancing it all (health/fitness, prepping for motherhood, business, mom life, etc)! Some of you asked for me to share a first trimester pregnancy update and week-by-week overview of what’s happened thus far so you can know what to expect. Are you expecting too? Or do you have any questions you’d like me to cover? Let me know in the comments below!
First Trimester Pregnancy Update | Weeks 6-12
Week 6 Pregnancy Update
We found out on July 8th that we were pregnant! And almost immediately, the first trimester symptoms started kicking in. I was feeling pretty nauseous, almost all day. Morning sickness? Mine was more all day sickness that came and went in waves. I had no cravings and no food aversions. Actually, I didn’t even have an appetite. Nothing sounded good and I only ate what was the most appealing choice at that given moment. Because it was summertime, that usually meant cold fruit like watermelon, strawberries, apples and bananas. And those of you who know me + my caffeine intake, I thought I would have a hard time cutting out coffee, but it wasn’t appealing at all. I only had one cup and it took me almost four hours to drink it. I started trying to drink as much water as possible instead. I also felt VERY bloated and had some tummy troubles. Let’s just say things weren’t as regular as usual (sorry for the TMI). And yes, I was emotional (lots of happy tears) and so tired. This made it hard to workout on a daily basis. I got tired and out of breath more easily. But, I pressed through and tried to keep my workouts as consistent and normal as possible!
Week 7 Pregnancy Update
This week, the nausea was still the same. I did tons of research on at home remedies and started chugging lemon water (and sitting next to a bowl of cut up lemons while I worked) per the advice I read online. I also found a homemade ginger cookie recipe as ginger is supposed to help get rid of nausea as well. Whether these two remedies actually worked or it was a placebo effect, I was grateful for the slight relief. I was still feeling very bloated and went from feeling nauseous to starving to SO full in minutes. What did I manage to eat and actually enjoy this week? Homemade pizza and Whole Foods guacamole!
Week 8 Pregnancy Update
Coffee was officially no longer appealing at all at this point. Per the advice from mommy bloggers and YouTubers (some of my favorites are here, here and here) I started following, I started eating smaller, more frequent meals. My appetite felt like it was coming back, which I was excited about! I didn’t feel as nauseous and continued with my lemon + ginger routine, as well as started putting candied ginger in my tea. Still fighting exhaustion, I took a naps some days to stay focused for work. I noticed it was getting increasingly harder to carry out my normal workout routine just because I was so sleepy! And on the upside, my tummy troubles were getting better, but I was still feeling bloated and jiggly.
Week 9 Pregnancy Update
A few months ago, I pulled a muscle in my back at the gym and the pain flairs up every once in a while, making it hard to get comfy in bed at night. I decided to be proactive and start going to the chiropractor again for lower back pain and preventive measures as my belly grows and a strong back is needed more than ever! I started noticing slight cramping during exercise (mild cramping is normal during the first trimester). I started lowering my weights, and incorporating higher reps to still get my sweat on. It was this week that I think I cracked the code on my tummy troubles: eating as much fiber as possible (Raisin Bran, fruit, Fiber One Bars) and drinking prune juice.
Week 10 Pregnancy Update
A new symptom: headaches. I started taking one Tylenol when absolutely needed. I was still really tired, but less nauseous (thank God). We were getting so excited for our upcoming first appointment with the doctor! I also booked a facial for week 11 since another lovely symptom popped up: breaking out non-stop on my chin and t-zone area. This week was also exciting because we planned out how to tell our families the news!
Week 11 Pregnancy Update
Our first ultrasound! We were so thankful that our little one was healthy. We got to hear his heart beat, saw his little legs kicking and got a glimpse of his profile. Josh and I just looked at each other and smiled, no words were needed. We were proud, so happy and so relieved all was well. My favorite part of the appointment was hearing the ultrasound tech refer to Josh as Dad. It was so sweet seeing him so excited. I got blood work done and we opted for the genetic test that tells you the gender (as well as the potential for Down Syndrome and other genetic disorders) within two weeks.
In week 11, I still had no cravings. I began feeling like the end of nausea was near as the first trimester was also coming to an end, so I kept eating whatever sounded appealing at that time. But, I got full really fast. I got my facial and talked to the esthetician (highly recommend her) about my breakouts, which also started popping up on my chest (my sister, who is also pregnant had the exact same problems). She ensured me that its was due to the influx of hormones and everything will start to balance out during the second trimester. In the meantime, I got a good exfoliation, some relaxation and walked away with some great tips on all natural skincare.
Week 12 Pregnancy Update
We shared the news with our families this week and they couldn’t have been more excited! My sister and I (who got married 6 months apart) are 3.5 months apart in our pregnancies, so we’re all excited on my side to have two little ones sharing so many memories and milestones. On Josh’s side, we’ll be giving his parents their first grandchild, so they’re thrilled. Skin update: I ordered some of the products that were recommended to me during my facial (I’ll do a review once I try them). Also, I started to notice that my skin was breaking out on my body where I was applying coconut oil to prevent stretch marks. I did a bunch of research on stretch mark prevention creams that also heal scars thinking I could use it for my body and my face from these breakouts once they heal.
First trimester, you’ve been exciting, scary and humbling. I’m ready for you second trimester! I’m so looking forward to our next ultrasound to see our little boy up close again and hear his strong little heartbeat.
